Currently, Google allows users to log into some services on the Chrome application of Android by just using fingerprints instead of having to enter a password. This feature will start to be available today for some Android phones and will be applied on all smartphones running Android 7 and later in the next few days. According to Google's help page, this feature also allows users to log in any way they have set to unlock the phone, which may include unlocking numbers and unlocking drawings.
Android phones previously allowed users to use fingerprints to authenticate purchases on Google Play and log in to the app. However, what's new here is that users can use the same fingerprints to log in to one of Google's web services on the Chrome browser. Currently, users can use the password view and edit feature Google has saved for them at password.google.com, but Google said it planned to add this functionality to more services of Google and Google Cloud in the future.
No need to remember the password to log in, it is much more convenient and secure. Password always has unpredictable vulnerabilities, even many people use the same password to register on multiple websites. However, with this method, the login information is stored locally on the device so bad guys cannot prevent or attack the company's server to get information and they cannot use a phishing attack to trick users into accessing a fake website. Using the password manager along with two-step authentication helps reduce many of these vulnerabilities, but Google's new approach will help eliminate these risks completely.
If there is a compatible Android device, users can try this function now by accessing passwords.google.com by using the Chrome app on the phone. This service helps manage all the passwords that Chrome has saved for users. If users click on any saved password, Google will prompt "verify it's you", then users can choose to authenticate by fingerprints or any other method they normally use to unlock the phone. Of course, users need a Google account to perform this process.
This feature of Google uses FIDO2 standard and WebAuthn protocol, an open authentication standard that websites can use to secure login information. FIDO2 is said to be much safer than regular passwords. All Android running version 7.0 and later are FIDO2 certified, bringing simpler and stronger authentication capabilities to over a billion devices that use this platform every day.
