According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harry Styles is negotiating to take the role of Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid. In early July, Disney announced that singer Halle Bailey would play Ariel.
While Disney's heroine choice has provoked fierce controversies, Harry Styles's entry into the film appears to be warmly welcomed by the audience. Ever since Disney announced the production of the live-action Little Mermaid, fans have continuously called former One Direction member for Eric role because of similarities in appearance.
Beside Harry Styles, the producer is also working with Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina. Director Rob Marshall is in charge of the casting process.
Disney has called singer Halle Bailey for Ariel role.
In 2003, Rob Marshall was voted the Best Director by the Directors Guild of America for Chicago (2002). The film won 06 awards at the 75th Oscar and 31 other awards on a total of 52 nominations.
After the success of Chicago (2002), Rob Marshall continued with a new project: Memoirs of a Geisha (2005). The movie gathered famous Chinese actors and actresses such as Yangzi Quynh, Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi. Recently, the 58-year-old director brought the audience a marvelous journey to the magical land of Mary Poppins Returns (2018).
When it comes to Little Mermaid, the original animated film was released in 1989, winning 02 Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song. The movie also won 02 Golden Globes for Best Original Score and Best Original Song. As a matter of fact, those glorious awards would not have gone to The Little Mermaid without the exceptional talent of composer Alan Menken. According to a source, Menken will continue to be the soundtrack composer for the live-action version.
Harry Styles gets a huge support from the fans all over the world on the race to Eric role.
Choosing Styles and Bailey shows that Disney is intending to turn Little Mermaid’s live-action version into a music party to surprise the audience. The thing is, Prince Eric does not have his own song in the original movie released in 1989. Obviously, the remake is a chance for musician Alan Menken’s talent to bloom, making a big difference between the 02 versions.
Starting his fame as a member of One Direction band, Harry Styles rocked the screen with his jaw-dropping performance in Dunkirk (2017) directed by Christopher Nolan. The film grossed $526.9 million worldwide and won 03 Academy Awards in 2018. After that, the singer also tried himself in the project of Elvis Presley’s biography directed by Baz Luhrmann, but failed in the end.
