5 box-office disasters rescued at the last minutes

"Warcraft", "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" or "The Mummy" were the worst films in their homeland, but were later rescued by international markets.

"Warcraft" (2016):

In only the North American market, "Warcraft" was a disaster. Duncan Jones spent $ 160 million on the film adaptation of the game of the same name, but the final product grossed only $ 47 million in the home country. The key, however, lied in China - a place where people love the original. In just the first 48 hours in a billion-population nation, "Warcraft" made 90 million dollars. In the end, the Chinese contributed to the work of about $ 218 million and raised the worldwide turnover to $ 439 million. However, "Warcraft" is not profitable and the implementation of part 2 is still only at the promises.

"xXx: Return of Xander Cage" (2017):

The xXx brand lost interest in North America despite the return of Vin Diesel, and the third part only earned $ 45 million. However, China made Paramount smile with $ 164 million. Thanks to the multi-national star cast, "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" was actually popular in many other international markets. The film's final gross was $ 385 million - an extremely good figure compared to the production cost of $ 85 million. Therefore, Vin Diesel is cherishing to continue making "xXx 4".

"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" (2017):

The last part of the series adapted from the zombie game of the same name really caused a surprise. The sales of "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" in North America was extremely poor with only 26 million USD. However, this was a rare foreign horror project allowed to be screened in China, and the product earned $ 159 million from the billion-population nation. Even, the total turnover of USD 312 million worldwide was the best achievement of the whole brand. Milla Jovovich has broken up with Resident Evil, but the production team is preparing to restart the series.

"The Mummy" (2017):

As the burden of opening the horror Dark Universe, "The Mummy" made Universal really disappointed when being disparaged, and only earned a mere $ 80 million in North America. It was partly because Wonder Woman debuted almost at the same time was so successful. Tom Cruise's appeal in international markets was still great, but it was only large enough to help "The Mummy" to collect 409 million dollars worldwide.

"Alita: Battle Angel" (2019):

One of the last films released by Fox before being acquired by Disney is James Cameron's ambitious project as a producer. "Alita: Battle Angel" earned only $ 86 million in North America. Even China did not bring Fox as desired with 133 million. Over time, the Alita female warrior was still collecting money for the production, and the film's performance stopped at $ 405 million. Not causing huge losses, but the key was that the project cost up to $ 170 million to produce. Now, unless "Avatar 2" earns more than $ 2 billion, Disney will never have James Cameron develop "Alita 2".
